Sooner or later, most people will feel the need for a flashlight, whether it is a small and simple model for sporadic home use or a highly sophisticated professional one for intensive daily work use. Among the many features that may be desirable or necessary according to the particular purpose, one of the chief concerns is to deal with the power source. The choice is between disposable batteries, also called primary batteries, and rechargeable ones, also known as secondary batteries.
In order to make an informed choice, one has to consider the purchase cost as well as the operating cost, both making the total cost of ownership over the lifetime of the flashlight. On another hand, it is wise to compare the technical performance of both technologies.
Another point of consideration is the technology used of the light emitting device. Most modern rechargeable flashlights use LED emitters. They are solid-state chips with no glass bulbs or heated filaments. They can work over 50,000 to 100,000 hours, that is to say a lifetime for a rechargeable LED flashlight. LEDs are more efficient than incandescent or halogen bulbs, so you’ll get even more battery life out of each charge.
- Rechargeable LED flashlight takes advantage of an extended battery work time. This can be up to 336 hours for some models.
- LEDs are extremely durable and have an almost an infinite life, in certain cases more than 100,000 hours!
- LEDs are virtually unbreakable since there is no glass or filament.
